Course info
On completing this course, students are better placed to practice as an artist/designer maker, to teach (secondary or postgraduate) and to work in arts administration and the creative industries. The course also provides a very sound platform for future research. The MA Ceramics Programme is located in the Centre for Ceramic Studies, Cardiff, which has a unique place within British, European and international education and is recognised as a Centre of Excellence. It attracts students on a global scale and no other establishment in Europe includes studies from undergraduate to doctoral level and post-doctoral research as part of its portfolio. The aim of the course is to facilitate the development of individuals as well informed practitioners, with the skills to articulate and express their concerns effectively and imaginatively, for success in professional practice, research or education. Through a broad and diverse approach, philosophically and practically, to the medium of ceramics, students are enabled to critically align their practice to the contemporary debate within the discipline, and within other creative visual work within the Fine and Applied Arts. In the first part of the course all students participate in a common programme of lectures, seminars and workshops to examine and understand practice as a means of enquiry both philosophically and culturally, which collectively, will influence and provide structures as means to develop and be more aware of those issues found within their studio work. As an outcome of this students undertake individually agreed studio and theoretically research based programme of study that form the final presentation by exhibition of practical outcomes, contextual support work and written text. At all stages of the course students' development is supported by individual / group tutorials and studio presentations.
