This programme will equip you with the necessary clinical, musical and theoretical skills you will need to practice music therapy in a variety of work settings. You will find the course intensive and challenging, both on a musical level and in terms of your own personal development. The training we provide is based on a psychological model which emphasises the importance of unconscious processes, as well as more observable behaviours, in human growth and development. You will study the theories and practices of music therapy through the observation and analysis of video, audio and written material. In addition, you will gain a deeper theoretical understanding of the processes of human development by carrying out an observation of a mother with her baby. You will develop your creative and expressive musical skills through clinical improvisation and vocal workshops. Your academic studies will be supported by clinical placements, which will enable you to gain experience of working with clients, and develop the skills and competencies you will require for professional practice. This will be supported by clinical supervision with specialist tutors. As part of the Health Professions Council's training requirements for Arts Therapists, you will also need to receive regular individual personal therapy. Personal therapy is a confidential arrangement between you and your accredited therapist and will not be assessed. However, you will need to receive at least 36 hours of personal therapy each year, at your own cost. If you are a qualified Music Therapist with a Postgraduate Diploma in Music Therapy or equivalent qualification, you can convert to the MA qualification, and contribute to the growing research culture within music therapy, by completing a dissertation of 15,000-17,000 words based on an area of your own clinical practice.

How much will it cost?
Subject to approval by the Board of Directors, annual tuition fees for students from the UK and other EU countries will be: FT: (Year 1) £4,520, (Year 2) £1,970; PT: £2,235; (Dissertation Option): £1,890. Course fees are subject to change and you are advised to check the current details with the course provider before enrolling on this course.

Entry Requirements
Typical minimum entry requirements include a good honours degree or equivalent qualification in Music or other relevant subject area. If your degree is not in Music, you must be able to demonstrate musical ability equivalent to that expected at degree level. Relevant experience of work with children and/or adults with identified difficulties is considered desirable and applicants must be able to demonstrate a level of maturity appropriate for therapeutic training. Candidates for whom English is not a first language are required to demonstrate a level of fluency equivalent to IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 600 (250 for the computer-based test). Entry to the programme is subject to an enhanced disclosure CRB check.
